In Tromsø, Norway – 215 miles north of the Arctic Circle – the sun has gone down for the last time this year. The sun will remain below the horizon during the “Polar Night” from November 26 until January 15, 2011. To mark the beginning of the ‘Mørketid’ as the period without daylight is called, hundreds of local kindergarten kids each brought a homemade candle to the city square where they were all lit.
On the plus side, this is one of the best places in the world to view the Aurora Borealis.
