Art In The Streets

Art in the Streets is the first significant US museum survey of graffiti and street art. The show traces the historical development of graffiti and street art from the 70s to today’s vibrant, global movement. It focuses mainly on the key urban centers of London, NYC, LA, San Francisco, and Sao Paolo, where a unique visual language evolved.

The exhibition features paintings, mixed media sculptures and interactive installations by fifty of the world’s most dynamic artists. The groundbreaking show includes works by Banksy, Shepard Fairey, JR, Larry Clark, Os Gemeos, Teen Witch and other street stars.

The exhibition at LA’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) runs from April 17 to August 8, 2011.

Wow! I would love to see this show! I am always fascinated by graffiti and the intensity and power of so many of the images I have seen. I think some of the effect Ive experienced has been in part because the artists are anonymous to me but it is of course wonderful that they are getting the recognition this show brings. Will the exhibit travel? I just had a cool experience in March in Isla Verde Puerto Rico where on a walk down the beach I saw some kids in action spray painting. I paused for a while to shoot pictures of them and was a little nervous they might not be happy about it. On the contrary, they were pleased to have their artistry noticed and I had a nice moment when I gave one of them the universal “thumbs up” and got a big smile and wave. Thanks Brian for the heads up on this show!
