London Can Still Be Whimsical

You may have seen the colorful, whimsical work of London-based artist Sarah Tanat Jones in periodicals or ads. Her marvelous drawings and illustrations are always a treat. I loved her recent London themed set. If you like them too, prints are available for purchase on her website.

A Real Superhero

enhanced-30740-1457690586-9

Muskaan Ahirwar is a 9 year-old 3rd grade student from Bhopal, India (yes that Bhopal). Every day after school she sets up a library in front of her home for the neighborhood children who can’t afford to attend school. She reads stories and tutors the younger children in reading skills. Last December the regional education board recognized her “Bal Pustakalaya” as an official library and provided 25 additional books for her collection.

Dude It’s Rude

Jr9nj1a

Inappropriate public transit passenger behavior is a problem in cities around the world. Over the years, TBTP has featured clever public relations campaigns from transportation agencies in Chicago, Tokyo, London, and Paris highlighting basic rider courtesy. Now, the New York Transit Museum is offering a new exhibition on these campaigns called “Transit Etiquette or: How I learned To Stop Spitting And Step Aside In 25 Languages”.

TransitEtiquette

Opening today at the Transit Museum Gallery in historic Grand Central Terminal, the exhibit casts a humorous focus on advertising addressing public transit decorum from around the globe. The show runs through this July.

Mapping Westeros in Ireland

The hugely popular HBO show Game of Thrones has been a real boon for Northern Ireland tourism. With dozens of filming locations around the region,  Tourism Northern Ireland has teamed up with Northern Ireland Screen to create an interactive app mapping locations where the mythical world of Westeros comes to life. The mobile app enables visitors to discover the real-life settings of GOT. Although the app is available on the Google Play Store, it’s not at the App Store yet.

I hope someone creates an app like this for the show’s film locations in Iceland before my next visit this Fall. Last year, I managed to drive by a number of GOT sites in Iceland without realizing that I was so near.

11 mirages

okuda-san-miguel-11-mirages-to-the-freedom-morocco-designboom-02

The magical work of Spanish street artist Okuda San Miguel is instantly recognizable due to his signature highly saturated color palette and the unique iconographic language of his geometric figures. His latest project, “11 mirages to the freedom”, wrapped a fresco around an abandoned church in Youssoufia, Morocco for the Street Art Caravan Festival.

During recent renovations at the Paris Trinité-d’Estiennes d’Orves Metro station, workers uncovered vintage posters from the early 1950s, hidden for six decades. The RATP will be restoring the find and adding the posters to its archives.

Formulary for a new urbanism

a74a2b2826b6e761411bf8a5e535347f

Drawing on his interest in contemporary psychogeography and cartography, the British artist known as Fuller—aka Gareth Wood—spent a decade working on his London Town project. Created with black ink on cotton board, the intricately detailed illustrated map of Britain’s capital is a mindbending exploration of the vibrant metropolis.

Researching and working on London Town for ten years enabled Fuller to continually incorporate the ever changing nature of the city while conveying its unique vibe. The completed project has been acquired by the British Library for the national collection, but you can have your own copy through Fuller’s website.
