Mapping Diversity

londomap

London-based painter and printmaker Yanko Tihov has created a brilliant map of London out of passports. Using census data, the map demonstrates the increasing diversity of the UK capital, while showing the most common non-British nationalities in each borough. Inspired by the international immigrant experience, Tihov’s map uses 32 different national passports that he has hand-painted with 23-carat gold seals. You can see more of Tihov’s wonderful maps, paintings and prints on his website.

No Oyster Card Required

Wooden-Tube-Station-by-Camilla-Barnard-12-1020x610

It took artist Camilla Barnard and master woodworker Gunter Luck nearly three months to create a replica of a London Underground station completely in wood. Commissioned for Transport for London and the 2015 Designjunction Show, the intricately detailed installation is complete with ticket hall, ticket scanners, east and west bound platforms, stacks of newspapers and a hand-painted Tube Map. The project is part of the ongoing celebration of the London Underground’s 150th anniversary.

Imagine Peace

2

The Imagine Peace Tower on tiny Videy Island in Reykjavik harbor doesn’t seem all that impressive most of the time, but on a few nights each year it’s illuminated and it’s magical. Tonight, the memorial built for John Lennon by Yoko Ono, will be lit from 8 PM to Midnight ( 4PM to 8PM New York time and 7PM to 11PM London time) to celebrate what would have been Lennon’s 75th birthday. You can see the ceremony on the Imagine Peace Tower webcam tonight and on other nights that the monument is illuminated.

Mind Where You Walk

Parisian-Floors-3

Last month we had a good look up at the gorgeous public sign art of Paris from the book Graphique de la Rue. Now we’re looking down through photographer Sebastian Erras’ lens. The German freelance photographer roams the streets of Paris capturing arresting images of the city’s floor and pavement designs that we often miss by not minding where we step.

No Tech Zone

tumblr_nvqkolintk1qz6f9yo1_1280

San Francisco artist and filmmaker Ivan Cash thinks that city residents and visitors need to be reminded to put down their devices once in a while and just be in the moment. A good reminder for all of us to be more mindful; this is the only moment we have.

Iceland by air

Traveling around Iceland this summer, there were so many times that I wished I could helicopter-up and get a birds-eye view of my surroundings. Not owning a drone, I couldn’t do it. But Springfield, Missouri-based freelance photographer Colby Moore was in the country about the same time and he created this amazing aerial/time-lapse/slo-mo video during his journey around southern Iceland.
