If you’re a fan of Monocle magazine and media, then the newly launched Monocle Travel Guide Series is for you. Published by Berlin-based Gestalen, the slim travel guides will be priced at $15 retail. As you might expect, the full color books are image packed and visually pleasing. each city guide is divided by interest rather than geography. Sections include restaurants, hotels, cultural attractions, architecture, shopping, and walking tours. The first two editions focus on New York City and London, with Hong Kong and Tokyo to follow later this summer.
No, not Bob; it’s Dylan Thomas Day. Literature Wales has inaugurated the first annual International Dylan Day to honor Wales’ favorite son Dylan Thomas. May 14th was chosen to commemorate the premiere of Thomas’ play “Under the Milk Wood”. Celebrations today include performances and poetry readings, as well as the “Dylans’ Great Poem” online initiative and a #Dylan Day twitter campaign.
London-based artists Louis Masai and Jim Vision are raising awareness about the decline in wild bee populations and the looming related environmental crisis for agriculture by creating arresting street art around the UK capital.
They’ve also enlisted stakeholders whose livelihoods depend on healthy bee populations to help spread the message about hive decline.
The project also includes wildflower seed giveaways, videos and exhibitions to encourage public discussion.
Each year Amsterdam’s amazing Rijksmuseum invites everyone to “Make your own Masterpiece” using the institution’s Rijksstudio interactive website. With more than 200,000 images, the site offers the opportunity to download and use the artwork for creative projects.
This year’s award, which comes with prize money ranging from €1,000 to 10,000, was won by Lyske Gais and Lia Duinker for their very cool Rembrandt Book Bracelet inspired by the museum’s collection.

Buenos Aires-based publisher Pequeños Editor has created a fun and educational book that can be recycled into a tree. The Tree Book Tree children’s book is printed on acid-free paper with environmentally safe ink. The book’s pages are impregnated with jacaranda seeds that will sprout into seedlings when planted. Los Angeles-based street artist Tristan Eaton spent the past week in New York City sprucing up the place. I’m especially taken with his wall called “Big City Dreams” in Soho. Check out his website and maybe buy a print while you’re there.
Blank on Blank is a project from Brooklyn-based Quoted Studios, which aims to preserve American interviews through animation. The wonderful video below features a long-lost interview between the iconic author Ray Bradbury and a young journalist named Chad Coates from February 24, 1972.
