In my writing I am acting as a map maker, an explorer of psychic areas… a cosmonaut of inner space, and I see no point in exploring areas that have already been thoroughly surveyed.

    What a dark universe that must have been! Burroughs described Vollmer’s death (he shot her) as a pivotal event in his life, and one that provoked his writing by exposing him to the risk of possession by a malevolent entity he called “the Ugly Spirit”:
