NPR : The Book

A few months back the Little Berlin Gallery in Philadelphia hosted a show of Texas-based artist Kevin McNamee-Tweed’s hilarious fictional book covers. Each of the pieces, done in watercolor, ink and gouache, offers a humorous take on contemporary publishing in the United States. There should be an actual book of Kevin’s faux covers coming out soon. The only question is who will design the cover.

The New York Project

tumblr_ngn5b3V6h01qd8br9o6_r1_500

There’s no ambiguity about New York City; you either love it or you hate it. Photographer Pavel Tenyakov clearly falls into the amorous category. His wonderful time-lapse video The New York Project will have even the haters longing for a spring day in the city that never sleeps.

Bibliomania

Vallicelliana

New York City-based photographer Franck Bohbot has been wowing photography fans with his perceptive and atmospheric images of scenes around North America. But bibliophiles will want to actively follow his ongoing project called House of Books. This pared down series simply captures the grandeur of great libraries around Europe and America.

Ye Old Transit Map

Londoners think that I’m mad, but I’m a big fan of the London Tube system and an even bigger fan of Tube maps. I get a kick out of the clever boots who create their own versions of the iconic Underground maps. Now the clever folks at the Londonist blog have produced a brilliant map that imagines what the stops would have been named on a medieval Tube map.

A Holiday Trip To The Moon

Moon-Madrid-Christmas-Lights-by-Brut-Deluxe_dezeen_468_1

This year’s holiday light display in central Madrid is designed to take spectators on a visual trip to the moon as they walk or ride along the Gran Via. Created by Brut Deluxe Studio, the repeating motif is a sequence of thirty-one lunar images. The only way to experience the effect of the light show is to travel the entire length of the installation, which will be in place until January 6, 2015.

Budapest Christmas

Christmas-tree-without-the-glitter-by-Hello-Wood_dezeen_468_11

For the second year, Hello Wood, an art/architecture/design project, has built a special Christmas tree in the heart of Budapest near Deák tér. Constructed of 5,000 pieces of firewood, and illuminated by specially designed lighting from Philips Hungary, the impressive tree stands 11 meters tall and is 4.5 meters wide. It also features a chapel-like interior with log bench seating. On January 6,2015, the tree will be dismantled and the firewood distributed by a local charity group.

Get On Board The Holiday Train

David-Wilson-Chicago-Christmas-Train-528x396

The Chicago Transit Authority is getting into the holiday spirit again this year with the wildly popular Holiday Train!.  Santa and his elves  ride the train passing out candy canes and season’s greetings.

The spectacular train is an amazing sight – during the daytime and at night. The outside of the six-car train is adorned with holiday seasonal images. Thousands of twinkling lights outline the shape of the train and windows, with even more lights running across the tops of the cars.

Interiors of the cars are decked out with thousands of multi-colored lights, red bows, garland, and red and green overhead lighting. The hand poles are wrapped to look like candy canes.

As the train pulls into each station, Santa waves to the boarding passengers from his sleigh on an open-air flatcar carrying his reindeer and decorated holiday trees.
