Yes, It’s Illegal!

lead_large

Launched in Copenhagen last year, Illegal! is a controversial magazine created to be sold by addicts to earn legal income specifically to fund their drug use without resorting to crime. Vendors can earn about $3.15 per copy sold.

While the concept may shock some, it is both a realistic harm reduction strategy—which allows addicts to avoid criminal behavior—and a way to significantly reduce local street level criminal activity. An unemployed drug addict often steals thousands of dollars a day in personal property to support a habit. The amount is so high because stolen items usually garner just 10 to 20% of their actual value to a thief. So, that $400 iPad lifted from your bag at Starbucks will only net the addict $40 or $50 from a fence.

Selling copies of Illegal! can potentially provide addicts with a legitimate way to fund their drug use and actually reduce crime in a community. And in case you’re wondering, the magazine content does not necessarily put a positive spin on drug use. The articles attempt to present honest information about illegal drugs .

The magazine is currently available in Copenhagen and London. Would you buy a copy ?

Postcards from Chernobyl

Just yesterday I saw a story online about the return of brown bears to the Chernobyl region after an absence of more than a century. The 1986 nuclear disaster may have been a catastrophe for people, but may ironically be a boon for wildlife. Earlier this year, freelance film-maker Danny Cooke visited Chernobyl and the nearby city of Pripyat to create this short video.

For the second year, Indies First—the campaign in support of independent bookstores—is celebrating Small Business Saturday by turning authors into volunteer booksellers at bookshops across the United States. The now annual event brings together writers, readers and booksellers to support independent bookstores. So if you’re in the States, stop by a bookstore from Gulliver’s Books in Homer, Alaska to Books & Books in Coral Gables, Florida and meet your favorite authors, and buy some books.

Save London’s Only Floating Bookshop

word-on-the-water-london-mobile-library-untapped

A few months back we posted story about London’s only floating bookshop Word on the Water. The terrific secondhand shop, moored on the Regent’s Canal in west London, is facing an existential threat from the Canal & River Trust which is planning to evict the popular bookshop and hand over the mooring site to a property developer. You can show support for Chris Screech and his crew by visiting the Change.org site and signing this petition.

When In Rome…Paint Something

xfwlPpu

The Italian street artist known as Blu recently completed this impressive mural funded by the residents of a century-old former military barracks in the heart of the Ostiense district of Rome. Porto Fluviale has been occupied by housing activists, squatters and undocumented residents since the summer of 2003.

Don’t Make This Mistake in Venice

20141120_trolley1

The city council in Venice, Italy has introduced a law that can result in fines of €100 to €500 for dragging wheeled luggage or baggage across the city’s cobblestone streets or walkways. The law was enacted to address two issues: noise pollution—those plastic wheels make an awful racket—and serious damage to the city’s walkways, bridges and marble stairways. So, if you visit la Serennissima, be prepared to heft that luggage.

Update: The city government has already backtracked on this legislation. They now say that will only apply to commercial wheeled cart and luggage trolleys.
